The takeaway
Urgency only works when the deadline is real, so give each campaign a defined audience and an exact window, and schedule it before the sale rather than on the day. Publish to the portal banner and mirror the same offer to email and SMS so subscribers see one message everywhere. When the window closes the banner hides itself, which means no stale offer to clean up.
An example
Illustrative example: the subscriber-only early-access window.
| Setting | Value |
|---|---|
| Audience | All active subscribers, or filtered by product, plan, country or CSV |
| Window | Mon 23 Nov 00:01 → Wed 25 Nov 23:59 |
| Channel | Portal banner, mirrored to email and SMS |
| Scheduled | Built in early November, runs itself |
| On expiry | Banner auto-hides |
Banner copy: eyebrow "Subscribers only · ends Wed 25 Nov, 23:59", headline "40% off anything you add to your next order", one button "Add to my order".
Put it into practice
- Map the windows first. Take the three windows from the implementation calendar: portal-only early access (23–25 Nov), email and SMS mirror (26 Nov), sitewide sale (27–30 Nov). Decide which campaign runs in each and to whom: early access to active subscribers, Order Now to active subscribers with an upcoming order, winback to cancelled subscribers.
- Create each campaign with its audience and window. In campaigns, set the audience filter and the exact start and end date and time. [confirm with product: campaign builder location, audience filter options, and how far ahead a campaign can be scheduled.] You should have one campaign per window, none overlapping for the same audience.
- Write the banner in three parts. Eyebrow carries the dated window, headline carries the saving, one button and no second ask. Prompts 02, 03 and 04 draft each campaign type from your offer details.
- Mirror to email and SMS with the same words. Use the banner's headline as the subject line and the SMS body, so the subscriber recognises the offer across channels. Schedule the sends inside the same window.
- Verify the schedule and the expiry. Preview the banner in a test portal account, confirm the start time, and check after the window that the banner has hidden and the campaign report shows the orders it drove.
Watch out for
- Vague urgency. "While stocks last" cannot be proven; a date and time can. Subscribers learn which one you mean.
- Overlapping campaigns to one audience. Two banners for the same subscriber blur both offers. One campaign per window per audience.
- Building on the day. A campaign written at 09:00 on Black Friday ships with errors and no report. Build it in early November.
Measure the result
Track orders attributed to each campaign within its window, from the campaign report, and compare against the same audience's normal order rate. Review the day after each window closes. If a campaign underperforms, check the audience filter and whether the email mirror landed inside the window.
